In all, Tyler had fifteen children, eight with his first wife Letitia and seven with his second wife Julia. His last surviving child, Pearl Tyler, who was ... his last child born, died on June 30, 1947, one hundred years, one week and six days after the death of his first child, Mary Tyler.
As a young man, John was very bright and headstrong. He was always a leader. In 1802, he entered The College of William and Mary. After he graduated in 1807, he began to study law with his father. Shortly afterward, he began his career in politics.

Tyler's response to the abolitionist challenge was one that he had outlined when a young congressman during the Missouri crisis. The pursuit of national destiny again was recommended as an antidote to sectionalism. In his address presented at Yorktown, Virginia, in 1837 to commemorate the fifty-sixth anniversary of the revolutionary battle that signaled victory over the British, Tyler exhorted the gathering:

In January 1862, while serving in the Congress of the Confederacy, Tyler became dizzy and vomited, as he had in numerous previous episodes. He complained of a chill, and went downstairs for a cup of tea. He then slumped to the floor, unconscious, but revived [2e].

After earning his degree in Ag Business with a minor in enology and the experience of seven winemaking seasons, Tyler was ready for his own enological endeavor. The idea to begin a winemaking venture began to unfold in 2001. John desired to culminate his grape growing tasks and complete the process by making his own premium wine. Suggesting this joint venture to Tyler, John supplied a half ton of pinot noir in the fall of 2001. Based on the quality of the initial wine, John and Tyler felt confidant about future vintages. The very best in winemaking skills and materials were used and the resulting vintage was bottled in 2003.
