John Tyler: Virginia House
built 642 days ago
Photographed about 1900, the parlor decoration at Sherwood Forest, John Tyler's homein Charles City County, Virginia, included two Chinese vases which were a gift from Caleb Cushing upon his return from negotiating the treaty with China in 1844. The vases, one of which contains large plumes, are on the floor in front of the mirror hung between the windows.

Following Virginia's secession on April 17, 1861, Tyler was elected to the House of Representatives of the Confederate Provisional Congress. This was the last of his many political offices. He was serving in this post when he suffered a stroke and died in a Richmond hotel on January 18, 1862. He was 71. He died in debt and in doubt, branded a traitor by the very government he had once headed.

Tyler had little faith in doctors. He regularly "took the waters" at various spas in Virginia. He became a believer in sulfur hydrotherapy. He ... took "massive" doses of calomel regularly, which may have contributed to his gastrointestinal problems. [2c]
