At Harrison's request, Tyler remained inactive during most of the 1840 election campaign. His major contribution was his surname, which formed the rhyming conclusion of the party slogan "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too." Few Americans took much interest in his candidacy, for the sixty-seven-year-old Harrison appeared to be in good health and had vowed to serve only a single four-year term.

Tyler was often inspired to write poetry when faced with difficult or transitional moments in his life. When his three-month old daughter Anne died in July 1825, Tyler composed an elegy which opened with the following two stanzas:

While a 30 year old Congressman in Washington, Tyler developed an illness that remains difficult to diagnose. Based on Tyler's clear description of the illness [More] it would today be described as a symmetric, generalized, subacute paralysis. His recovery was so slow and prolonged that he resigned from Congress for two years [2b].
