Columbia finally agreed, giving Singleton a $7 million budget. The film, which had its first screening at the Cannes Film Festival in the spring of 1991, follows three characters at two different stages in their lives: first at the age of 10, then at age 17. At the beginning of the film, Tre Styles, the protagonist, is sent by his mother, Reva, to live with his father, Furious, in hopes that the unruly boy will learn to be a man. In his new neighborhood Tre meets two half-brothers who live across the street: Rickey and Doughboy. Together, these three characters grow up in an environment where, as David Denby described in New York magazine: "all day, jets heading for LAX come in low over the small tract houses; at night, police helicopters join in the din, training down their lights. The sun shines regularly, but the little boys play football with a corpse lying nearby, and a teenage girl tries to read through the rattling of gunfire."

The frequently busy John Singleton has signed a deal with Paramount to bring Tom Clancy's "Without Remorse" to the big screen. The project looks to be the beginning of a new franchise, if everything goes according to plan.
With today's DVD release of Hustle & Flow, written/directed by Craig Brewer, co-producer John Singleton is suddenly ubiquitous. Hustle and the Singleton-directed Four Brothers (... just out) gave the onetime overnight success a good 2005.

Singleton then directed “Four Brothers” (2005), a remake of John Wayne’s “The Sons of Katie Elder” (1965) set in the streets of modern-day Detroit. Starring Mark Wahlberg, Andre 3000, Tyrese Gibson and Garrett Hedlund as four adoptive brothers (two black, two white) whose mother is gunned down in a grocery story robbery, “Four Brothers” was a straight-forward and unabashed revenge thriller that either pleased or disappointed critics for its simplistic narrative. Despite the mixed reviews, “Four Brothers” faired well at the box office, earning over $55 million in its first few weeks of release.
On August 23, 2007, Singleton was involved in an automobile accident, in which he struck and killed a pedestrian. Staying on the scene until police arrived, Singleton was not found to be under the influence of alcohol or other substances, and was released after being questioned. The case was turned over to the District Attorney but no charges were filed.[1][2][3]
