John Quincy Adams was the 6th President of the United States of America. He served one term as President (1825–1829) and then returned to Congress where he spent the remainder of his political career pursuing abolitionist motives. He was the son of President John Adams and Abigail Adams. After graduating from Harvard College, he became a lawyer. At 26 he was appointed Minister to the Netherlands by President George Washington, then promoted to the Berlin Legation. In 1802 Adams was elected to the US Senate and 6 years later President Madison appointed him the first U.S. Minister of Russia.

John Quincy Adams was the son of President John Adams, served as U.S. Senator from Massachusetts and was Secretary of State under President Monroe. In the presidential election of 1824, no one candidate received a majority of electoral votes and the election was decided in Adams' favor by Congress. The election of 1828 was the first in which the candidates were chosen by state legislatures instead of congressional caucuses, making the popular vote more of a factor. Adams lost by a wide margin to the Democrat from Tennessee, Andrew Jackson. Although he served only one term as president, Adams was elected in 1830 to the House of Representatives, where he served for the remaining 17 years of his life.

He proposed that the federal government unite the United States with a network of canals and highways. He called for a department of the interior to regulate the use of natural resources. At the age of 15, the young John Quincy Adams served as Secretary to the Mission to Russia. On his return to the United States, Adams studied at Harvard. After his graduation, he studied law. President Washington appointed Adams Minister to the Netherlands in 1794, a position he held until 1797, when he became Minister to Prussia.

John Quincy Adams was born in Braintree, Mass., on July 11, 1767. During the first years of the American Revolution, he received his education principally by instruction from his distinguished father and gifted mother, the incomparable Abigail. As a boy of ten he accompanied his father on diplomatic missions to Europe. There he learned French fluently in a private school at Paris; next he studied at the University of Leiden. In 1782–1783 he accompanied Francis Dana, as secretary and interpreter of French (then the language of the Russian court), on a journey through the German states to St. Petersburg, returning to Holland by way of Scandinavia and Hannover.

In 1793, at the age of 26, he was selected Minister to the Netherlands, then advanced to the Berlin diplomatic office. At the age of 35 he was voted into the U.S. Senate, and six years later, in 1809 until 1814, President Madison selected him as Minister to Russia, where he befriended Czar Alexander I. Some are of the opinion that Adams was one of the great Secretaries of State.
