John Nash: Works
built 633 days ago
Little mention of Nash's numerous mathematical theorems, the originality and difficulty of which makes him one of the best pure mathematicians of the 20th century. However Nash's work on manifold embedding, which must rank among his most characteristic work, is referred to in at least one scene.
Encouraged by Alicia, Nash worked in a communitarian setting where his eccentricities were unremarked. He developed an interest in calculating the exact values of large numbers, research that impelled him to Princeton's Information Centers where he developed computer programs. Here, he had more contact with Princetonians, which helped Nash to cope with his mental illness.
Nash taught at MIT from 1951-1959 when he lost his job after being struck with the disease, paranoid schizophrenia. At MIT, he worked on the theory of real algebraic varieties, Riemannum geometry, and parabolic and elliptic differential equations. He was called the most promising mathematician in the world before the disease struck.
Is it significant that Charles credits John with having discovered "window art"? What does that suggest? How is what John is doing a kind of art work? What is a window anyway? What sorts of windows is he writing on? What old kind of window art does this resemble?
Edward Coulter became too ill to work his farm so Samuel and Jane Nash went to live with the Coulters. Samuel and Jane had a daughter Lucy who remained a spinster and still lived at Stonelands with Edward Coulter's daughter Nellie (... a spinster) in the mid-1930's.
Nash associated his own madness with living on an “ultra logical” plane. He argued that if being cured stopped him from carrying on with his original work at a high level, then a remission might not be worth it in the end.
