After two semesters at Boston's Berklee College of Music, Mayer drops out to pursue music and relocates to Atlanta, Georgia. "Atlanta's my musical home," he says in 2003. "It really was the place where I really came alive." He becomes a frequent performer at local blues clubs, self-releases his first album, Inside Wants Out, and performs at the prestigious South by Southwest Music Festival in 2000, where he lands a contract with Columbia Records' Aware Records.

After displaying an impressive repertoire of original songs and melodies, several music labels offered John Mayer recording deals in 2000. He eventually signed with Aware/Columbia Records and released his debut album, Room For Squares, one year later. With his blues-influenced sound and deep lyrics, the album was received like no other in recent memory. Tracks like "Your Body is a Wonderland" and "No Such Thing" became instant hits and helped Room For Squares go triple platinum in two years.

Mayer again recorded live concerts across seven nights of his U.S. tour in 2004. These recordings were released to the iTunes music store under the title as/is, indicating that the errors were included along with the good moments. A few months later, a "best of" CD was compiled from the as/is nights. The album included a previously unreleased cover of Marvin Gaye's song "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)", featuring a solo from Mayer's support act — jazz and blues turntablist, DJ Logic. All the album covers of the as/is releases feature drawings of anthropomorphic bunnies.[26]

Once he settled in the South, Mayer refined his musical style, making it mellower and removing some of its raw blues elements. He ... began frequenting a popular songwriters' haunt called Eddie's Attic and received songwriting tips from locals. Following several small gigs in Atlanta, Mayer released an independent album called Inside Wants Out in 1999, which featured both acoustic tracks and others backed by a band.
