John Mayer attained pop stardom with his first album, Room For Squares (2001). A breakout hit in 2002, the album earned Mayer TV guest spots and spawned the hit song "Your Body is a Wonderland." Known for guitar-oriented pop and soulful lyrics, Mayer followed his overnight success with a 2003 Grammy (for Best Pop Vocal Performance) and two more releases: the live performance CD Any Given Thursday and the studio release Heavier Things. Mayer grew up in Connecticut and attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston before moving to Atlanta, Georgia to focus on a professional career.

John Mayer was nicely set up at Columbia -- he was offered the services of expert producer John Alagia, who previously worked with the Dave Matthews Band and Ben Folds Five. In one year, Mayer put together Room For Squares, which was immediately given four stars by Rolling Stone upon its release. The praise continued as tracks like "No Such Thing" and "Your Body is a Wonderland" invaded the airwaves, and helped Mayer's debut album go triple platinum and stay on the Billboard Top 200 for 80 consecutive weeks.

Heavier Things, Mayer's second album, was released in 2003 to generally favorable reviews. Rolling Stone, All Music Guide and Blender all gave positive, although reserved, feedback. PopMatters said that it "doesn't have as many drawbacks as one might assume".[24] The album was commercially successful, and while it did not sell as well as Room for Squares, it peaked at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. Mayer earned his first number one single with the song "Daughters" as well as a 2005 Grammy for Song of the Year, beating out fellow contenders Alicia Keys and Kanye West. He dedicated the award to his grandmother, Annie Hoffman, who died in May 2004. He ... won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, beating Elvis Costello, Prince, and Seal for the award.
