John Hegley: Luton University
built 130 days ago
John_hegley_event_full Downbeat poet John Hegley moves away from his traditional themes of dogs, spectacles and Luton for this foray into entomology. Insectophobes need not steer clear...: other subjects of scrutiny include potatoes and family histories. A diverting hour of performance art, Hegley's latest show features music (in the form of ukelele sing-alongs), crafts and even a swing. The main draw, however, is Hegley's poetry — performed in his trademark wry fashion — which remains witty, heartwarming and always entertaining. [Source]

An evening spent in the company of the gloriously offbeat poet, John Hegley, is a little like pulling on your Christmas jumper: colourful, often absurd, but ultimately deeply warming. To mark the festive season, Luton's most famous son arrives at Studio 68, Battersea Art Centre's cabaret bar, for Christmas Creatures, a series of intimate evenings dedicated to Hegley's substantial trove of animal poems. But in the space of an hour, where do you begin?
Hegley was born in Islington, London, into a Roman Catholic household, and was brought up in Luton and Bristol. He has French ancestry, and his family is believed to be related to the composer Jean-Philippe Rameau. He has written a number of collections of poetry, ranging from the surreal to the humorous to the personal and emotional.

The University's Poetry Live programme of visits for 2005/6 was launched on 4 November with a performance by poet/comedian John Hegley. The event attracted a very good audience in the Westminster Theatre and was followed by a book signing, which sold out most of the seven titles on offer. John Hegley performed a mix of his humorous verse and songs, some of which involved audience participation and a memorable solo performance by Prof Peter Styles.
