While in prison John Gotti became seriously ill with cancer of the throat, some say this was due to an abscess in his mouth that had been left untreated by prison staff. Gotti`s lawyers and family had asked on several occasions if the specialist John had seen on the outside could be allowed in to attend to his badly infected mouth.This specialist had carried out dental work on johns teeth before his incarceration, and had pioneered the technique used to cap John`s teeth.Access was denied by the prison authorities. John Gotti died of throat cancer in Marion federal prison on June 10th 2002 at approximately 12-30pm. John Gott was 61 years old. Till his death in prison Gotti remained unrepentant and unbowed. A true Toughguy.
John Gotti was born Oct. 27, 1940, one of 13 children of poor immigrant parents from Naples. Gotti quit school at 16 and gravitated to petty crime. His violent ways drew the notice of Gambino family wiseguys in his Brooklyn neighborhood in the 1950s.

It featured Victoria Gotti as a single mother, raising her three teenage sons while managing a career and personal life. Viewers were captivated by the series, which provided them with an inside look at one of the most well-known families in America. As a result of the success of the show, he and his brothers, Carmine and Frank, became teenage heartthrobs and were nicknamed the "Hotti Gottis." Sometimes called "Mr. Charismatic," John was known for his love of hair gel and designer clothes.

In 1973 John Gotti was given a contract to kill James McBratney, who was accused of murdering a nephew of Carlo Gambino. After a botched job with two witnesses, Gotti was put in prison for 2 years on second degree manslaughter charges. Gotti served the time and got out to find big changes in the family.
From his underground cell at Marion, Ill., Gotti allegedly continued to control the Gambino family through his youngest son, John Jr., but his power and influence clearly waned. The younger Gotti eventually pleaded guilty to bribery, extortion, gambling and fraud and was sentenced to nearly 6@1/2 years.

Soon after his conviction, Mr. Gotti, according to federal prosecutors, appointed his eldest son, John A. Gotti, known as Junior, the acting boss of the Gambino family. Investigators said he did this to make sure that his son and closest relatives would continue to get a huge share of the gang's profits.
