Frankenheimer last film on DVD is ... his latest: Ronin. This is a post-Cold War thriller about now-redundant ex-spooks recruited by a murky Irish terrorist organization to recover a mysterious silver case also sought by Russians. There are attempts to make the characters played by Robert De Niro and Jean Reno human, which is slightly ludicrous considering the way they've spent their lives and their current endeavor. There is also a mostly submerged, equally ridiculous romantic subplot for De Niro and Natascha McElhone's pouty Irish terrorist.

In 1958 solliciteerde Frankenheimer naar een baan als filmregisseur bij het Amerikaanse filmproductiebedrijf Warner Brothers. Naar verluidt wilde Frankenheimer zo graag films regisseren dat hij zich twee weken in een hotelkamer opsloot omdat hij te zenuwachtig was over de uitslag van zijn sollicitatie.

Frankenheimer war aktives Mitglied der US-amerikanischen Gewerkschaft der Regisseure (DGA) und wurde mehrfach in dessen Präsidium gewählt. Nach seinem Tod richtete seine Familie zusammen mit der DGA eine Stiftung zur Förderung und Ausbildung junger Filmemacher ein.
