Almost all episodes would begin where John Candy would be trying to show an outdoor skill to some kids, to which he would then say it reminded him of a story, where he would tell of the episode in narration. John was a dedicated leader of Camp Candy, a summer camp that is presumably built by him, and he tries to get various kids to get along. The children included Robin, a nature-loving girl, Alex, a tomboy, Vanessa, a fashionista, Iggy, a hypochondriac and his more adventurous younger brother Binky, and Rick, an arrogant prankster. Adult characters ... included Nurse Molly, who had a crush on John but he never seemed to take notice as he was interested in an attractive redheaded receptionist called Miss Sweetingham. John's main antagonists were Rex DeForrest III, a man who seeks to demolish Camp Candy in order to make way for a condominium, and Chester, a dimwitted greaser employed by DeForrest. Another antangonist included Hob Nayles, a strict disciplinarian who headed the rival Camp Kickboot and sought to humiliate John, but was really a coward at heart.
Canadian comic actor John Candy was geared toward a performing career even while studying for a journalism degree in college. Candy's bulky frame and built-in likability enabled him to secure small roles in Canadian film and TV productions. In the early '70s, Candy joined Canada's Second City Troupe, sharing the spotlight with such potent talent (and subsequent close friends) as Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Dave Thomas, Andrea Martin, and Catherine O'Hara. Second City TV, popularly known as SCTV, entered the Canadian TV airwaves in 1975 and was syndicated to the United States two years later. Candy scored an instant hit with such characters as porcine poseur Johnny LaRue, overly unctuous talk show sidekick William B., and ever-grinning "Lutonian" musician Yosh Shmenge. So popular did Candy become that suddenly many of his obscurer pre-starring Canadian films (It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time, The Clown Murders) became hot properties on the video rental circuit.
John Candy Collection - Uncle Buck/The Great Outdoors/Brewster's Millions/Going Berserk/The Blues Brothers John Candy has one of his finest opportunities in this film by John Hughes (The Breakfast Club) about a perpetual screw-up (Candy) who gets his act together enough to watch over his brother's kids effectively. The late actor scores big points resurrecting elements of his more decadent persona from SCTV days, but he ... has some persuasively touching, sentimental moments. Hughes's direction is not as focused as it was only a few years before, but there's no mistaking his touch. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, production notes, biographies, Dolby sound, optional Spanish and French soundtracks. --Tom Keogh

John Candy The Collection John Candy teams with some of the stars of the hugely successful US television hit show Saturday Night Live, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd among them. And when Belushi and Aykroyd had a chance to bring their SNL act of The Blues Brothers to the big screen, they made sure Candy was part of the cast. The tale of brothers Jake and Elwood and their quest to raise funds for a Catholic orphanage by reforming their band is the stuff of movie legend. The film boasted many memorable cameos including James Brown, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin.
Candy-.jpg A classic big-guy comedian, John Candy played a series of exasperating but lovable lugs on television and in the movies. Candy was a product of the Toronto cast of the famous Second City comedy troupe, and he became part of the ensemble cast for the hit Canadian sketch comedy series SCTV (1976-83). From there he moved into feature films, including Stripes (1981, with Bill Murray), the romantic comedy Splash (1984, with Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah), Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987, with Steve Martin), and the Jamaican bobsled comedy Cool Runnings (1993). He died of a heart attack suffered in Durango, Mexico on location for his last film, Wagons East.
