John Dudley Ball ({1911-1988), writing as "John Ball", was an American author best known for novels involving the character Virgil Tibbs, first introduced in 1965 in In the Heat of the Night. Tibbs was an African-American police detective from Pasadena who in the first book of the series must solve a murder in a racist small town in the American South. That novel won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel from the Mystery Writers of America and was made into a movie of the same name starring Sidney Poitier.

John Ball has been hired by Paddock Pools & Spas as senior vice president of retail merchandising to lead new retail store growth initiatives. Ball was vice president/merchandising for Design Within Reach; before that. he held merchandising positions at corporations such as Poolmart, Universal Studios and Eddie Bauer. Paddock is a pool builder and outdoor living specialty retailer based out of Scottsdale, Ariz., and a Pool & Spa News Top Builder.

With the use of charcoal drawing John Ball will discuss and demonstrate seeing and recording accurate values and edges. Students will have the opportunity to practice and receive instruction in the principles that are discussed. By working in charcoal the student has a quicker, simpler means of discovering and practicing two of the three necessary fundamentals of direct painting. Once confidence is gained in seeing and recording accurate values and edges, the student is able to progress to the third fundamental of direct painting which is color temperature.

John Ball's work plays a small but important role in Holocaust-denial. Because deniers must minimize the importance of testimony from the perpetrators and survivors of Nazi crimes, they put forth the notion that only physical evidence can be trusted. Because aerial photographs of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, declassified in the 1970s, show evidence of the extermination process, deniers must discredit these photographs as having been tampered-with. This is John Ball's role.

Canadian photo analyst and cartographer John Ball demonstrates via a slide show numerous forgeries and lies surrounding "Jewish survivor stories" such as the The Auschwitz Album Photos. Apparently, "marks" were drawn on aerial photographs taken of Auschwitz by Jews working in the US Military and/or State Department showing things such as lines of prisoners, chimneys and solid walls that never existed. Ball makes the point that there were only chain-link fences around the entire camp and Auschwitz was surrounded by actively-worked farms.

In March 2005, John Ball, a Parkinson’s advocate from California, ran his 10th consecutive LA Marathon. John and his wife Edna, created Team Parkinson, to encourage other runners with PD to participate in the marathon and to raise money for research. The organization has brought in over a half million dollars so far.
