"John Agar" was one of a promising group of leading men to emerge in the years after World War II. He never became the kind of star that he seemed destined to become in mainstream movies, but he did find a niche in genre films a decade later. Agar was the son of a Chicago meatpacker and never aspired to an acting career until fate took a hand in 1945, when he met "Shirley Temple", the former child star and one of the most famous young actresses in Hollywood. In a whirlwind romance, the 17-year-old Temple married the 25-year-old Agar.

John Agar first came to fame when he married actress Shirley Temple, a marriage that later fell apart due to his battles with alcohol. The 24-year-old Agar first met Temple when he was asked by producer David O. Selznick to escort the then 16-year-old Temple to a Hollywood party. They ended up marrying before the year was out. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Agar was the oldest of four children of meat packer John Agar, Sr. and Lillian Rogers Agar. He attended Chicago's Harvard School for Boys in Chicago and Trinity-Pawling Prep School in Pawling, New York. After serving for three years in the U.S. Army Air Corp, where he was a physical training instructor, Agar signed with Selznick for a string of box office heavyweights, including Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, and Sands of Iwo Jima.

Reuters reports that John Agar, who appeared in John Ford-directed Westerns before settling into a career in B-grade sci-fi and horror flicks, died earlier this week at age 81. His films include "Revenge of the Creature," "The Mole People" and "The Brain from Planet Arous."

John Agar is listed as being born in 1730 and having died 1815, and was probably the most renowned of this distinguished family of York clockmakers. A watch made by him is displayed in the British Museum. This clock was constructed circa 1760.

Agar married Temple later that year, at a lavish Selznick-produced affair attended by most of Hollywood's elite. But the marriage was a stormy one that marked the beginning of Agar's struggle with alcohol. The couple had one child, a daughter, but divorced after four years.

The senior NCO, Sgt. Maj. O'Rourke (Ward Bond), has a son who has just graduated from West Point, Lt. Michael O'Rourke (John Agar). Lt. O'Rourke has arrived at the Fort with his orders at the same time as Col. Thursday and his daughter. Lt. O'Rourke and Miss Thursday, in a series of silly encounters that may be counted as part of the comic byplay, hit it off immediately, and before long O'Rourke makes it clear that he is seriously interested in Miss Thursday and that his intentions are honorable.
