In 2005, John ignored the threats from some Hindu fundamentalists and agreed to play the lead role in the controversial film Water, which portrays the tragic fate of Hindu widows in pre-independant India. The film was written and directed by independent Canadian film-maker Deepa Mehta. It had a rocky history; the first attempt to make the film was in Varanasi, where an angry crowd burned down the set. Abraham signed for the director's second attempt to make the film, this time the set was in Sri Lanka. The film has been popular overseas, and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 79th Oscar Award, which exposed Abraham to a worldwide audience.

In 2003, Abraham made his Bollywood debut with the controversial movie Jism at the age of thirty. He has appeared in a number of successful movies since then which include Dhoom (2004), Garam Masala (2005) and Taxi No 9211 (2006). In 2004, John braved threats of violence and professional discrimination when he signed on to the film Water, a critically-acclaimed independent film written and directed by Deepa Mehta. Water deals with the controversial history of India's widow population. The film was so incendiary that the production was compelled to move from India to Sri Lanka to avoid mob violence and threats of murder and arson. Abraham starred in the central love story as an idealistic and open-minded young man whose thoughts, shaped by Mahatma Gandhi's teachings on equality, were well ahead of their time and flew in the face of the customs in his community.
