Johannes Brahms (May 7, 1833 in Hamburg - April 3, 1897 in Vienna) was a German composer, pianist, and conductor. He composed orchestral as well as chamber music, but no operas. He is widely considered as one of the most influential and important composers of Western classical music.

Johannes Brahms , 1833-97, German composer, b. Hamburg. Brahms ranks among the greatest masters of the romantic period. The son of a musician, he early showed astonishing talent in many directions; he chose as a boy to become a pianist. As accompanist to the violinist Eduard Reményi he attracted the notice of Johann Joachim, who introduced him to leading musical circles. Brahms became the devoted friend of Robert and Clara Schumann , both of whom admired his compositions. His later activities as pianist and as choral conductor were not very successful, but after he settled in Vienna his compositions brought him enough money to support himself in simple comfort.

Johannes Brahms was born in Hamburg, Germany, on May 7, 1833,and died in Vienna on April 3, 1897. His First Piano Concerto took shape over the years 1854-1858. Brahms played the solo part in the first performance, which took place in Hanover on January 22, 1859, with Joseph Joachim conducting. In addition to the solo piano, the score calls for two each of flutes, oboes, clarinets, and bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, timpani, and strings.

Johannes Brahms was born in Hamburg. His father, Johann Jakob Brahms, came to Hamburg from Schleswig-Holstein seeking a career as a town musician. He was proficient on several instruments but found employment mostly as a horn player and double bassist. He married Christiane Nissen, a seamstress, who was considerably older than him. They lived in the poor Gängeviertel district of the city, near the docks. Johann Jakob gave his son his first musical training.

Johannes Brahms was born in Hamburg in 1833. He was introduced to Liszt and Schumann, who hailed him as a genius at 20. During his early years he was a teacher, and pianist in theatres and clubs. For a while he accompanied a violin virtuoso, travelling round the world. He became music teacher to a Princess which gave him time to begin serious composing. He was a very strong character who opposed Liszt and Wagner in what he called their 'new music'.
