Johann Sebastian Bach: Life
built 652 days ago
Bach Statue in Eisenach, Germany In 1993 Tomoko Yamamoto traveled to several small towns and cities in Germany to trace the life of Johann Sebastian Bach by photography. She went back to Eisenach in 1999 to take additional photographs. In 2004, she went back to Bach's country again, this time visiting Dresden, Leipzig, and Weissenfels with her cameras. These photo shoots form the basis of two Bach multimedia programs: Bach and His World and Bach in Weissenfels.
During his last year, Bach's eyesight began to go and in 1749 he had two operations to help his vision. The operations could have been responsible for shortening his life. On July 28th, three months after his last operation, Bach died at 65. He was buried at St. John's cemetery in Leipzig. His widow, Anna Magdalena, lived for another 10 years before she died in poverty.

Bach wrote many works for "clavier," usually understood to mean an unspecified keyboard. Although the piano ("Klavier" in German) was invented in Bach's lifetime, most scholars doubt he had one or intended any of his music for it. His keyboard works may have been intended for harpsichord or clavichord instead.
