The second crisis of Joel's time was military disaster, threatened by an invading army (2:1-11). This large, well-disciplined foe (probably Assyria) followed a "scorched earth" policy in the lands it conquered (2:3). The blast of a trumpet (ram's horn) by a watchman on the city wall signaled the enemy's approach (2:1, 15).

Socialite Nicole Richie and her rocker boyfriend Joel Madden are reportedly having problems. Although the rumors have not been confirmed, Nicole is believed to be expecting her first child with Madden. She was seen with a growing ‘baby bump’ and was photographed constantly holding something in front of her stomach. Sources believe Nicole’s rumored pregnancy could be putting stress on the pairs relationship.

Three years later, Joel got word that he would be transferred to Grand Cayman for business, and it was at that time that this London-based couple decided to take their relationship to the next level. Just before the move, Joel popped the question on Easter Sunday during a walk through Hyde Park. Island-bound, Thara and Joel set out to marry at their new home in Grand Cayman. Though it wasn't a "destination" wedding in the most traditional sense of the word, it certainly was a fantastic getaway for the couple's 40 guests.

The character of Joel escaped the Satellite of Love (S.O.L.) in a previously undiscovered escape pod (named the Deus Ex Machina) mislabeled as a crate of "Hamdingers". After his departure he returned just once, in the show's final season (episode 1001: Soultaker), having turned the escape pod into a makeshift spaceship. He returned to the S.O.L. to make repairs and give Mike a pep talk. Joel reported that, since leaving the ship, he had traveled around the Australian outback, doing pyrotechnics for the band "Man or Astro-man?", and that he was currently working as a manager at a Hot Fish Shop in Osseo, Minnesota. (In the real world, the most famous Hot Fish Shop in Minnesota [1] had closed the weekend that episode 1001 aired, although the shop was located in Winona, Minnesota, rather than Osseo.)

Joel refers to the natural/national disaster of the locust and tells the people this is to be a warning to them so that they might repent. This disaster heralded the Day of the Lord which could only be averted by genuine repentance. If they repented, this day of judgment would come upon their enemies rather than upon themselves.
