Joel Schumacher (born August 29, 1939) is an American film director, writer, and producer. Career Schumacher was born in New York City. His mother Marian, of Swedish descent, was widowed when Schumacher was 4. He studied at Parsons The New School for Design. After first working in the fashion industry, he began his media work as a costume designer and developed his skills with television work. He wrote the screenplay for the 1976 low-budget hit movie Car Wash and a number of other minor successes.

I’d be thrilled if it was being made by another director, but Joel Schumacher is a terrible director. Each “good” movie Josh mentioned above isn’t that good. Sure, The Lost Boys is a bad movie that’s fun to watch, but that’s due to the cool performance by Kiefer Sutherland and the great soundtrack. The direction is amateurish. He doesn’t know how to build suspense. A simple example of poor directing: The shots of the vampires flying out of their lair is from the point of view of their shoes, unless they are flying backwards, watching were they were.

Born and raised in working-class New York City, versatile Hollywood director Joel Schumacher started out as an art student. After graduating from Parsons School of Design, he worked for several fashion design firms and dressed window displays at a department store. He found work as a costume designer (Woody Allen's Sleeper and Interiors) and screenwriter (Car Wash and The Wiz) before turning to full-time directing. After a few TV movies, Schumacher made his feature-length directorial debut with the Lily Tomlin comedy The Incredible Shrinking Woman, followed by the Mr. T vehicle D.C. Cab. Schumacher finally hit mainstream success in 1985 with the Brat Pack classic St. Elmo's Fire, kick-starting the careers of Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Andrew McCarthy, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Emilio Estevez, among others. This was soon followed by the beloved teen vampire flick The Lost Boys, starring both Corey Haim and Corey Feldman.

Joel Schumacher grew up in a relatively poor neighborhood of New York City. His mother was widowed when Schumacher was 4, and worked six days and two nights a week to support the family. Adulthood came quickly for young Schumacher, as he started working part-time at a butcher shop at the age of nine, started drinking and smoking by 10, and lost his virginity to an older boy at 11. In his early 20s, Schumacher studied design and display at Parsons School of Design, designed window displays for New York department stores, and eventually worked for Revlon. He lost about five years addicted to red speed (liquid methamphetamine), but finally kicked the needle in 1970, once his trackmarks had helped him to sidestep the draft.

Joel Schumacher is renowned for his versatility, style and ability to move seamlessly between film genres with equal popular success and critical acclaim. He began his film career as a costume designer for such legendary directors as Woody Allen (Sleeper, Interiors) and Herbert Ross (The Last of Shiela), before making his own name as a screenwriter with Sparkle and Car Wash. After cutting his teeth directing two television movies, Joel made his feature film directorial debut on The Incredible Shrinking Woman in 1981. His career soon took off with such iconic fare as St. Elmo's Fire and The Lost Boys, followed by other successes - Cousins, Flatliners, Dying Young and Falling Down. He would go on to direct film versions of two best selling novels by John Grisham (The Client and A Time to Kill) as well as two installments of the blockbuster Batman film series, Batman Forever (which co-starred Jim Carrey as 'The Riddler') and Batman & Robin.

Following the death of his friend the Penguin at the hands of Batman, Joel Schumacher was determined to get his revenge. He promptly took on the job of director for the next film in the series, entitled "Batman Forever", though it is said that Schumacher wanted the name changed to "Batman is Gay". He managed to ruin the reputation of a brilliant superhero with this film, and quickly followed it up with "Batman and Robin", which effectively destroyed any self respect that Bruce Wayne had left. Because of this great feat, Joel Schumacher was given a discount on Satan's honours list, and was able to buy his knighthood for only four shillings.
