Joe Simon, legendary comic book writer, editor, artist, publisher, and creator of such well-known characters as Captain America, was one of the pivotal creators of comics right from the early days. He is still creating and his work is still being acquired, although no longer limited to the comic medium. So influential has Simon been to the world of comics and popular culture, that Michael Chabon referenced and acknowledged Joe Simon and The Comic Book Makers in his Pulitzer-winning novel, The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. When others speculate that Joe Simon is the inspiration for one of the characters in The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, Simon responds, "I've yet to read the novel, but I lived the life."

Joe had been job hunting without success, but on that day he pleaded with the sales manager of a Chevrolet dealership to hire him as a salesman. The manager was reluctant because of his lack of experience and traditionally slow sales in the month of January, but Joe stated that he would only take a desk somewhere in the rear of the dealership and count on the telephone to provide prospects. That evening he sold his first car and borrowed $10 from the manager to bring a bag of groceries home to his family. In his second month he would sell eighteen cars and trucks and was beginning to feel he had a secure breath. Much to his amazement, the owner of the dealership fired him for being too aggressive. Some of the other salesmen had complained.

Despite his bravado, Joe may ... harbor some insecurity and low self-esteem. He once described to Peter how he gave Kevin a "love tap" punch after Kevin beat him at a game, then beat him until it became a blur. Kevin had to live in foster care for some time after that. Also, in the episode, "Ready, Willing, and Disabled", Joe began to doubt his self-worth after a thief (wearing a Jimmy Carter mask, a reference to Point Break) escaped arrest. To bolster his spirit, Peter encouraged him to enter the Special People's Games (a Special Olympics parody) in the decathlon. Joe went on to win the decathlon, but only after Peter spiked his water bottle with steroids.

From childhood, Joe was trained in the family business. By age 20 he elevated himself to General Manager of the Auction Pool and had complete responsibilities for the setup and conduction of the family’s weekly 300 vehicle Auto Auctions. At the age of 30, he focused his attention on the one aspect of the business that he had not mastered; that of the Auctioneer. In 1987 he attended and Graduated from the Missouri School of Auctioneers and began his career as an Auctioneer.
