Joe Satriani ©Jay Blakesberg A[F]ter picking up a guitar at the age of 14, the self-taught virtuoso Joe Satriani has since elevated fans and music lovers with his original and impressive style of play. Since the late 1980s, Satriani has left his mark on the rock industry and emerged as one of the most sought-after guitarists: having taught legions of guitarists, from Metallica's Kirk Hammett, to Counting Crows' David Bryson, as well as jazz fusionist Charlie Hunter.

Rock music’s most renowned electric guitarists, Joe Satriani, will undertake a nine date UK tour starting Monday 12th May 2008 at Birmingham Symphony Hall. Paul Gilbert will be special guest on all of Satriani's UK concerts except for Nottingham Royal Centre on Wednesday May 21st.
Joe Satriani has taught a lot of guitarists from famous bands of the '80s and 90's how to play and has become widely respected for his work. There are not many guitarists of this time that have accomplished as much as he has.

In late 1993, Satriani joined Deep Purple as a short-term replacement for departed guitarist Ritchie Blackmore during the band's Japanese tour. The concerts were such a success that Satriani was asked to join the band permanently
The Extremist lives up to its name, continuing Satriani's tradition of exploring new musical and compositional ground. A vastly different array of musicians assists him in creating the songs displayed on this all-instrumental disc, and as such the songs are different from even the usual envelope-pushing Satriani fare. The chugging "Summer Song," the warm "Friends," the slamming "Motorcycle Driver" and the crunching "The Extremist" show Satriani's talents as a guitarist are undiminished, while the more traditional neo-folk approach to "Rubina's Blue Sky Happiness" and the bluesy "New Blues" are different from anything he has done before. So, too, is the droning rock of "War" and the plaintive, questioning funk-rock of "Why."
Satriani is widely recognized as a technically highly advanced rock guitarist and has been described as a virtuoso[8][9]. He has mastered many performance techniques on the instrument, including Legato, two-handed tapping, sweep-picking, volume swells, harmonics, and extreme whammy bar effects. One of his trademark compositional traits is the use of Pitch Axis Theory, which he applies with a variety of modes.
