Joe Durant used to be a top investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board. (When a cop remarks to him that he was an NTSB legend, Durant says, "We're all legends. Anybody who can work a crash site automatically becomes a legend. It's a nice benefit of the job.") But the job took its toll, and Joe left the profession to work for Boeing as an engineer. This career shift... didn't save his marriage; his wife walked out and Joe was left to raise his 15-year-old daughter on his own. One year after the split, Joe's wife returns for a visit--but tragically the plane she's taking from Sun Valley to Seattle crashes, killing everyone aboard.

Joe Durant has three top-5s in the last five years at the Pods Championship and he should be one of the third-tier favorites to win here. The problem is he has been consistently inconsistent in his play this year. In six events in the 2007 season, he has alternated making and missing the cut. Considering the way he has played this year he has more risk than normal, but his past history is so good here he is worth a shot

Despite winning in 2006, Joe Durant fell one shot short of the Children’s Miracle Network Classic 72-hole record. Durant ended at 25-under 263. John Huston set the record of 26-under 262 in 1992 and later saw it matched by Duffy Waldorf in 2000. Durant knows something about records. He holds the PGA TOUR record for a 90-hole tournament (2001 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic) at 36-under 324.
