Joan of Arc (1412-1431): Death
built 267 days ago
The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc is an oddball interpretation of the condemned heretic who was declared a saint by the Catholic Church 500 years after her death. But then, as noted at the outset, nothing about her life or her death was normal. She remains an enigma.
Joan of Arc by J. A. D. Ingres Joan of Arc (1412-1431) was a French peasant girl who became an important military leader. Though she was condemned to death by the Inquisition, the Roman Catholic Church has since canonized her as a saint.

In her own words Joan not only recanted the signing but declared that she had not been aware of what she had signed. "I had never intended to take an oath not to take man's dress again." For which the Inquisition sentenced her to death saying, "Time and again you have relapsed, as a dog returns to its vomit ..." for doing nothing more than wearing the clothes of the opposite sex.

[I]t is not clear whether Joan, who was illiterate, fully understood the document that she signed, or, for that matter, whether the inquisitors truthfully disclosed to Joan what was in the document. At any rate, in a matter of days Joan disavowed her confession and resumed wearing male dress. The court denounced her as a relapsed heretic beyond hope of redemption, and sentenced Joan to death.
