Joan of Arc: Voices
built 225 days ago
The Passion of Joan of Arc is Carl Dreyer's masterpiece and generally regarded as one of the greatest films ever made. It focuses only on the trial of Joan and is notably for the style of cinematography and the intensity of its images. It is a silent film. The version we are seeing... has a soundtrack consisting of Voices of Light, the oratorio by Richard Einhorn inspired by the film and drawing on the transcript of Joan's trial and medieval texts about her, the role of woman, and spiritual matters. Both film and oratorio can be appreciated as distinct, separate works. What is the effect of the film's style in comparison to the film style of Jacques Rivette's Joan the Maid?

Gieuseppe Verdi, Jean d'Arc, L'Homme d'Orleans, oil on canvas, 1429AD Joan of Arc was oxidised after being convicted of wizardry. Commonly wizards are considered to be allies to Voldemort, whereas Joan was firstly proven to be an ally of Dumbledore. This has proven confusing to many scholars. This indicates that the will of God may change over time and can be easily mistaken for Satan's advice. Reconvening, the Council of Trent established the following requirements for how to react if voices are heard:
's portrayal of Joan of Arc when she first heard her call; , , and are behind her. Oil on canvas in two joined vertical panels. , . Before entering upon her campaign, Joan summoned the King of England to withdraw his troops from French soil. The English commanders were furious at the audacity of the demand, but Joan by a rapid movement entered Orléans on 30 April. Her presence there at once worked wonders. By 8 May the English forts, which encircled the city, had all been captured, and the siege raised, though on the 7th Joan was wounded in the breast by an arrow. So far as the Maid went she wished to follow up these successes with all speed, partly from a sound warlike instinct, partly because her voices had already told her that she had only a year to last. But the king and his advisers, especially La Trémoille and the Archbishop of Reims, were slow to move.

In the spring of 1428, she left Domrémy in secret, accompanied by a kinsman, Durand Laxart, for Vaucouleurs. Her petition to Sir Robert was rebuffed and she returned to Domrémy.
Inspired by the Joan of Arc legend, the story centers on a young crusader named Jeanne and her quest to turn back an unrelenting English army. While the Hundred Year's War rages between France and England, an army of demonic creatures attempts to invade the human world. Blessed with a mysterious armlet, Jeanne is commanded by voices from beyond to use its power to seal away the demon king and recover her homeland once and for all.
Guided by what she thought were divine voices, Joan of Arc revived French fortunes in the Hundred Years' War. Her death only made her more powerful. Article by Don O'Reilly for Military History Magazine.
