Joan Jett

Joan Jett is one of the founding members of The Runaways along with Kari Krome and Sandy West. Kari Krome (replaced by Micki Steele and later Jackie Fox), Lita Ford, and Cherie Currie completed the line-up. While Currie initially fronted the band, Jett ... sang lead vocal, played rhythm guitar and wrote or co-wrote much of the band's material. The band recorded five LPs, with one becoming one of the biggest-selling imports in U.S. and U.K. history. The band toured around the world and some of their opening acts included Cheap Trick, Van Halen and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. They found huge success abroad, especially in Japan.

Joan Jett has been a fixture in the music industry for more than two decades beginning her career with the all girl rock band," The Runaways" while still in her teens. Jett's solo career began in 1979 with the demise of The Runaways, where Jett had been chief songwriter and lead singer at the time. She had already produced one album for The Germs and was still working on her solo career when she met Kenny Laguna. They formed what turned out to be a career changing partnership for both of them. Jett had the talent and determination, Laguna knew the music business and is a performer/songwriter himself through common respect and loyalty they put those talents and resources into building what they thought was a successful music career....instead they built a legend.

Joan Jett has not lived an ordinary life. From the time she was 15, she was in a band, starting with The Runaways, an all-girl rock 'n' roll group which ... featured Lita Ford and Cherie Currie. When The Runaways broke up in 1979, Jett went straight to The Blackhearts, which has been together ever since. Her voice is the essence of rock 'n' roll: It can be tough, sultry, mean, and sensual all at the same time. When she sang "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" in 1981, that wasn't just a novelty or a tip of the hat to a musical genre; it was a heartfelt declaration that was as sincere as any love song. Jett is a touring workhorse, punk-rocker, godmother to all "riot grrls," glam queen, and good musician. She recently took a break from working on a new album to talk to The Onion about her recent recordings, her critics, her work with The Germs and The Gits, and more.

Joan Jett has always refused to discuss her personal life in public, but many songs here dance around one of the topics she won't discuss. Many of the songs deal with sexuality and gender, including the album's two covers. They are a very fun take on the classic glam song "A.C.D.C" by Sweet, and a mildly twangy cover of the Replacements' "Androgynous". Both were excellent choices for covers, whether or not she wanted to play around with sexuality and gender bending themes. With original songs, she continues exploring these ideas with the songs "Everyone Knows", "Fetish", and "Baby Blue".
