For many people, Joan Crawford brings to mind images of poor parenting, but for real fans, Joan Crawford will always remain an icon of the silver screen. Born in San Antonio in 1905, Joan began life a long way from Hollywood, but her early training as a dancer led her to seek her fortune in Los Angeles in the early 1920s. Her beauty and talent helped her to quickly land a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios.

If you visit Hollywood....be sure to drive by Joan Crawford's home on 426 N. Bristol Avenue. This road is off of Sunset Boulevard on the west side of the 405 freeway. Marilyn Monroe's last home (and place of her death) at 12305 Fifth Helena Drive (off of Carmelina Street) is nearby but on the south side of Sunset Blvd.

On the morning of Tuesday May 10, 1977 – Joan was at the end. Two women (probably fans) were looking her after. They weren’t nurses. She had been bedridden for months. One of the women arrived at 8am, to take over watching Joan. When the woman realized that Joan was dying, she began praying softly, then a bit louder.

Crawford's hand and foot prints are immortalized in the forecourt of Grauman's Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood. She ... has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1750 Vine Street. In 1999, Playboy listed Crawford as one of the "100 Sexiest Women of the 20th century," ranking her #84.

Crawford's career was not so much carefully constructed as it was carefully planned -- and there is a difference between the two. You get the sense from this docu that Crawford didn't so much have an image of herself in mind (her face and sense of herself changed endlessly). But she did have plans of action, goals and, more than anything else, events and emotional turmoil in her youth that she planned never to return to again. To succeed in Hollywood, of course, was the ultimate conscious plan.
