The Place, or Palace, was added about 1468 when the influence of the Boyd family was at its strongest. It was built as Lord Boyd's private apartments and was designed for comfort, although defence was not entirely forgotten. In 1735 the Place was seriously damaged by fire and lay in ruins for the next 200 years. In 1749 the Boyd family sold the castle and the estate. Since then there have been many owners, including the Earl of Glencairn, friend and patron of the poet Robert Burns.

Born in Glasgow, Boyd began his career with junior side Petershill before turning senior with Edinburgh side St Bernards. He joined Newcastle United in 1925 and stayed there for ten years, making 214 appearances and scoring 14 goals for the Magpies. During this period he helped his side win the FA Cup in 1932 and earned one cap for Scotland, in 1934.[1]

During this last cross country season, Boyd took another runner, Will McCoy, under his wing, coach Nat Carter said. The two had qualified for the Junior Olympics national finals, a post-season running competition. McCoy qualified as part of a team that wasn’t planning on making the trek to Spokane, Wash., for the race. Boyd ran with McCoy and convinced him to go and run anyway for the experience.

Bio: Boyd's uncles all played old-time music, including Uncle Charlie Boyd, who was buried with his fiddle. Jimmy Boyd didn't pick up the banjo until he was 30. He and his brother, Billy, formed the Dry Hill Draggers in 1981. The group has persevered even as some members have died.
