Jimi Hendrix: Experienced

Hendrix often achieved a massive sound by using octaves, as well as ringing open strings. Fig. 4 makes use of both techniques in an example inspired by “Third Stone from the Sun” (Are You Experienced). Be sure to mute the string that lies between the octaves with the underside of your fret hand’s 1st finger, at the same time letting the appropriate open string(s) ring.

Jimi Hendrix Lunch Box - click to enlarge This lunchbox may not redefine lunch, but Jimi Hendrix was a musical genius who single-handedly redefined rock music. Beginning with the groundbreaking "Are You Experienced?" album in 1967, Jimi did things with a guitar that no one thought possible. Even now, 40 years later, one can't help but marvel at his sheer talent and showmanship, whether it's playing behind his back, controlling and playing the fuzz feedback (long before there was grunge), or lighting his guitar on fire in an on-stage sacrifice. Front and back feature graphics of Jimi playing his trademark right-handed Stratocaster upside-down and left handed! Sidebands read "Are You Experienced?"

Amazingly, Hendrix would only record three fully conceived studio albums in his lifetime. Axis: Bold as Love and the double-LP Electric Ladyland were more diffuse and experimental than Are You Experienced? On Electric Ladyland in particular, Hendrix pioneered the use of the studio itself as a recording instrument, manipulating electronics and devising overdub techniques (with the help of engineer Eddie Kramer in particular) to plot uncharted sonic territory. Not that these albums were perfect, as impressive as they were; the instrumental breaks could meander, and Hendrix's songwriting was occasionally half-baked, never matching the consistency of Are You Experienced? (although he exercised greater creative control over the later albums).
As a 'final golden touch' to all the excellent Hendrix family releases, comes this 4-CD boxset with not a single track overlapping with the rest of the family releases. This is golden stuff, mostly, and there are only two reasons for which I deny it the ultimate rating: (a) like every boxset, it's essentially a collection and so the rest of the albums are at a formal disadvantage; and (b) it's NOT for the Hendrix beginner - it's for that experienced connoisseur who wants to get his hands on everything the guy had given his angelic consent of releasing. It could have been better, too.
Jimi mentioned "watching the sunrise from the bottom of the sea" in a dream as some inspiration for this. He made that idea a lyric in "Are you Experienced?" later on the album.

You know the Experience Hendrix site has some shows you won't find in stores for sale, but your point is taken. As a huge Hendrix fan, it is going to be a test of patience to see shows trickled out, while they re-release Are You Experienced? for the hundreth time. Same with The Doors. For goddsakes, just hire a full time person to do nothing but go over the live shows, clean them up if they can, and prepare for release. Peace.
