An early Class A racing champion, Jim Davis was one of the few who won titles under the banner of the predecessors to the American Motorcyclist Association, the Federation of American Motorcyclists (FAM) and the Motorcycle and Allied Trades Association (M&ATA). He excelled in board-track racing and on dirt ovals. Davis ... won the very first national race sanctioned by the AMA, the 25-mile AMA National Championship held on a one-mile dirt oval in Toledo, Ohio, on July 26, 1924.

After college, Jim Davis spent two years working for a local advertising agency before becoming an assistant to Tumbleweeds creator Tom Ryan. Jim learned the skills and discipline necessary to become a syndicated cartoonist and began his own strip, Gnorm Gnat. When he tried to sell the strip to a newspaper syndicate, he was told: "It's funny, but bugs? Who can relate to a bug?" After five years of drawing Gnorm, Jim drew a giant foot that fell out of the sky, crushing Gnorm in his last comic appearance.

Jim Davis studied at the Ball-State University, and went to work at an advertising agency afterwards. He became the assistant of 'Tumbleweeds' artist Tom K. Ryan in 1969. After a while, he created his own 'Gnorm Gnat' strip, which was published in an Indiana newspaper. In 1978, he joined United Feature Syndicate, and launched 'Garfield', probably the biggest cat in comics. Garfield comic strips and gags have been published in over 2,500 newspapers worldwide.
