Jim Carrey is a rubber-faced comedian in the Jerry Lewis mold. His work on the sketch comedy show In Living Color (1990-94) made him a cult comedy figure; his starring role in the surprise hit Ace Ventura, Pet Detective (1994) made him a star. Carrey's crowd-pleasing style mixed juvenile slapstick with manic improvisation; by the late 1990's he became one of Hollywood's most popular (and best-paid) stars. Later films included Dumb and Dumber (1994), The Cable Guy (1996, with Matthew Broderick), and The Truman Show (1998, with Ed Harris). He played comedian Andy Kaufman in the 1999 movie Man In the Moon, and in 2000 wore green makeup for a film based on the Dr. Seuss classic How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Although known primarily for his hit comedies such as Bruce Almighty (2003, co-starring Morgan Freeman), Carrey has ... turned in dramatic performances.

Born January 17, 1962 in Newmarket, Ontario, Jim Carrey knew by age three that show business was in his blood. At age 15, Carrey took off for Toronto to perform at Yuk Yuks, the famous comedy club. Following the performance, Carrey's career took off and for the next few years he worked in comedy clubs all over Canada. In 1981, at age 19, he packed his belongings and moved to Los Angeles. Carrey immediately became a regular at Mitzi Shore's Comedy Store, attracting the attention of comedy legend Rodney Dangerfield. Dangerfield was so impressed with the young comic that they began touring together.

Rubber-faced, hyperkinetic Jim Carrey went from a life of poverty in his native Canada to become the highest-priced comic actor in the known universe. Encouraged by his father, he began performing routines at stand-up clubs in Toronto at age 15. While not exactly winning over the crowds then, Carrey returned to the same venue two years later with a more polished delivery and caught the attention of booking agents who hired him to open for Rodney Dangerfield in Las Vegas. Again, his relative youth worked against him and he returned north where he acted in the made-for-Canadian TV-movie "Rubberface" (1981), playing a struggling stand-up comic.
