Jim Carrey photo Jim Carrey is yet another comedian imported from Canada. Raised by a poor family outside Toronto, Carrey made his mark on Hollywood in the '90s with a string of wildly popular comedies like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask. As he's matured, Carrey has ... tried his hand at dramas (The Majestic, Man on the Moon), with mixed success.

At 16, Jim dropped out of High School altogether and, keen for a life in show business, concentrated on his stand-up act. Percy, now battling manic depression, was a keen stage dad and, being something of a comedian himself, helped Jim write his first routines. The boy had made his debut at 15 at Yuk Yuk's comedy club, dressed in a yellow polyester suit with tails, made by Kathleen and similar to the garb he'd later don in The Mask. And it was a disaster, a titter-free embarrassment. Yet Carrey was undeterred and carried on scoring slots at Toronto's clubs, perfecting his impressions of Michael Landon, Henry Fonda, Gandhi, a post-Armageddon Elvis and his own hero, James Stewart. Stewart was what Carrey wanted to be, an all-round nice guy but (unlike Percy) no pushover.

Carrey made the leap to feature leading man with the surprise smash "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" (1994). A non-stop showcase for his distinctive brand of physical and verbal humor, "Ace" featured outrageous riffs, including an extended sequence where he talked out of his butt. While most critics dismissed the film, audiences flocked to the theaters and made Carrey bankable. "The Mask" (1994), filmed back-to-back with "Ace", firmly established his box-office clout as it garnered over $20 million in its first weekend. Here he played an everyday schlub who finds a magical mask that turns him into an over-sexed cartoon superhero (with a nod to Tex Avery)--sort of a more extreme take on Jerry Lewis' "The Nutty Professor". The film ... boasted an extended song and dance sequence with Carrey belting out the Desi Arnaz rumba number "Cuban Pete.”

Carrey made his film debut in the short film Rubberface (1981). Four years later, he had a starring role in the dark comedy Once Bitten as Mark Kendall, a teen virgin who is pursued by a 400-year old vampire (Lauren Hutton). Carrey did not experience box office success until almost a decade later when he was cast in the starring role in the comedy Ace Ventura, Pet Detective, which premiered only months before In Living Color ended. The film was panned by critics, and helped earn him a 1994 Golden Raspberry Award nomination as Worst New Star. However, the film was a huge commercial success, as were Carrey's two other starring roles, in The Mask and Dumb and Dumber, both released the same year.
