One of England's most versatile character actors, Jim Broadbent was born on May 24, 1949, in Lincolnshire, the youngest son of furniture maker Roy Broadbent and sculptress Dee Broadbent. Jim attended a Quaker boarding school in Reading before successfully applying for a place at an art school. His heart was in acting, though, and he would later transfer to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). Following his 1972 graduation, he began his professional career on the stage, performing with the Royal National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and as part of the National Theatre of Brent, a two-man troupe which he co-founded. In addition to his theatrical work, Broadbent did steady work on television, working for such directors as Mike Newell and Stephen Frears. Broadbent made his film debut in 1978 with a small part in Jerzy Skolimowski's The Shout (1978).

Born in 1949 in Lincolnshire, England, Jim Broadbent was the son of a furniture maker and keen amateur actor. He spent his early education at a Quaker boarding school in Reading, after leaving school, he studied art for a year before giving in to the lure of the stage, graduating from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in 1972. At first he played small roles in regional theatres, but after four years he struck out on his own, and helped set up the National Theatre of Brent. His career went on from strength to strength, and he got his big break in 1976, when he appeared in Ken Campbell's 12-hour sci-fi play Illuminatus, in which he played a dozen characters.

Renowned actor Jim Broadbent has joined the cast of the latest Indiana Jones film, which began principal photography on Monday, June 18, 2007. Broadbent's rich and varied repertoire in film, television and stage includes many celebrated roles. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Iris, which ... earned him the Golden Globe Award. Broadbent received a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor for his boisterous performance in Moulin Rouge!, and his memorable turn as W.S. Sullivan in Topsy-Turvy earned him a BAFTA nomination in the same category. Broadbent's other screen credits include Time Bandits, Brazil, The Crying Game, Bridget Jones's Diary, Gangs of New York, Longford, and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.

Jim Broadbent's desire to act runs in the family. His dad Roy was a maker of furniture, while his sculptress mum Dee looked after the kids, of which Jim was the youngest. Both parents were keen amateur dramatists and founder members of the Lindsey Rural Players. This was a troupe who sprang from the Holton Players, an acting group set up during WW2 by a community of conscientious objectors. When, in the late Sixties, the LRP bought a Methodist chapel in Wickenby (a small village between Lincoln and Market Rasen) to use as a theatre, Roy was instrumental in the conversion. Sadly, he died just after completion, so they named the new Broadbent Theatre after him.

Variety reports that British actor Jim Broadbent has been cast in "Indiana Jones 4" as a Yale professor. Shooting on the Indy sequel has already begun and is taking place this summer in various locations, including New Haven, Connecticut where Yale University resides.

His mother ran an amateur dramatics society in the local church and, aged four, the budding thespian made his first stage entrance, in A Doll's House.
