Jezebel The Bible's original bad girl, Jezebel isn't the type to suffer fools gladly. She's just happy to make them suffer. As she told us, "I'm witty, stunning (so my subjects tell me), and I can mix a martini while sentencing one of those annoying religious anklebiters to death without batting an eye." So how's she going to get on with some of the more pious Arkmates? Will they – or she – survive the encounter?
In an attempt to weaken righteous leadership, Jezebel is the force that draws millions of Christian men into hours of television. She is behind the explosion of Internet pornography. Today she is luring men of God into secret lives of bondage and condemnation. Some leaders, once powerful men of prayer, are now too ashamed to even sneak into the throne room. They are wracked with condemnation. They have been reduced to being mere eunuchs of Jezebel.

ashtray The portrayal of Black women as Jezebel whores began in slavery, extended through the Jim Crow period, and continues today. Although the Mammy caricature was the dominant popular cultural image of Black women from slavery to the 1950s, the depiction of Black women as Jezebels was common in American material culture. Everyday items – such as ashtrays, postcards, sheet music, fishing lures, drinking glasses, and so forth – depicted naked or scantily dressed Black women, lacking modesty and sexual restraint. For example, a metal nutcracker (circa 1930s) depicts a topless Black woman. The nut is placed under her skirt, in her crotch, and crushed.21 Items like this one reflected and shaped White attitudes toward Black female sexuality. An analysis of the Jezebel images in the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia reveals several patterns.

The third action Jezebel takes before Jehu arrives is to sit at her upper window. The Deuteronomist may be deliberately conjuring up images to associate Jezebel with other disfavored women. For example, contained within Deborah's victory ode is the story of the unfortunate mother of the enemy general Sisera. Waiting at home, Sisera's unnamed mother looks out the window for her son to return: 'Through the window peered Sisera's mother, behind the lattice she whined' (Judges 5:28). Her ladies-in-waiting express the hope that Sisera is detained because he is raping Israelite women and collecting booty (Judges 5:29-30). In truth, Sisera is already dead, his skull shattered by Jael and her tent peg (Judges 5:24-27).

When the Jezebel spirit is confronted with the truth, it would perceive the confronter as the enemy. Then it counter-attacks with assaults against this "enemy". In fact, no greater wrath seems to occur than when a controlling person is confronted. This person will never admit guilt or relinquish the sense of power and will retaliate against the confronter. Defensiveness is a common reaction when a suggestion is made. Pride with a mixture of insecurity, which is deep rooted, cannot take correction, because all correction is perceived as rejection.

The Jezebel design was extrapolated from two early 70s film ideas called Hampshire and Harper’s Bazaar. Both were uncredited, somewhat badly drawn, almost impossible to typeset satisfactorily, and very limited in character set. It was necessary to go back to the drawing book to explore a better balance and easier setting potential. The subsequent character set expansion took Jezebel to a much superior level of functionality, with the addition of multiple alternates and swashes to fit a perfectionist’s eye.
