built 218 days ago
Tel Aviv's Museum of the Jewish Diaspora, which opened in 1978, is a treasure trove of information about the Jewish people and their history, offering various tours focusing on different aspects of the collection. It is organised thematically rather than chronologically, and special temporary exhibitions shed light on the Jewish experience in specific countries or regions (Siberia, Hungary etc).

The first issue of the journal "Diaspora" appeared in 1999 and was fully devoted to the Jewish Diaspora. Some of the most important contributions were those by the faculty members of the Jewish University in Moscow and the Center of Jewish Studies and Jewish Civilization. The combined issue 2 and 3, 1999, deals with different problems of sociology, history, ethnology, cultural anthropology, demography and intercultural relations as regards the Russian diasporas.

"How much Diaspora can a human being bear?" is the question asked by the sociologists Daniel Levy and Natan Sznaider, in one of the articles in this issue. They understand Diaspora as an identity-building, positive term, nowadays corresponding to the experiences of the broadest variety of ethnic or religious minorities. Diaspora as a counter-concept to an exclusive, ethnic nationalism. – Paradiso Diaspora?
