built 209 days ago
Over the years, the Jewish families have received reports from other former prisoners and guards that the missing Jews are alive and being held in different prisons. Questioning Circumcision: A Jewish Perspective Bound by this burden to comply with social expectations, most Jewish parents do not recognize that circumcision is a choice. Since open communication about circumcision is discouraged, there is virtually no awareness of others who feel similar conflicts and doubts around circumcision. Moreover, if a Jewish parent does decide not to circumcise a male child, it is not generally known to the rest of the community. As a result, many parents submit to the pressure and then discover only too late, perhaps after witnessing the circumcision of their son, that they wish they had chosen differently. Some parents report that if they could take back one decision, it would be their son's circumcision.

AJIS 2001, using the same survey methods as those of NJPS 1990, found the U.S. population to have 5.5 million adults who report themselves as either Jewish by religion or of Jewish parentage and/or upbringing. Of that number, 2.8 million adults, or 51%, indicated their religion as Jewish when asked, "What is your religion, if any?" The 1990 survey ... found 5.5 million adults who reported themselves as either Jewish by religion or parentage and/or upbringing. In that survey 3.2 million, or 58%, indicated their religion as Jewish. The data suggest a 12% decline in the number of adults who identify with Judaism as a religion since 1990.
