Jet Set Willy: Manic Miner
built 478 days ago
In the early- to mid-1980s, Matthew Smith wrote a pair of games for the Sinclair Spectrum: Manic Miner and Jet-Set Willy. Manic Miner, in particular, was a stunningly good quality game for its day, and took the world by storm; it created a huge demand for a sequel, which eventually arrived in the form of Jet-Set Willy (JSW). Despite being a bit rushed, and having a number of serious bugs in it, JSW was, if anything, even more popular than the original. Both games were converted to all the major (and most of the minor) computer platforms of their day, and became something of a cult legend; they were certainly among the most popular computer games ever released. Their appeal was partly in the skill required to play them, partly in the exploration element (it was a real challenge to get to some of the less accessible rooms and see what was in them), and partly thanks to their quirky, dream-like conception and off-beat humour.

Jet Set Willy has a similar game engine to Manic Miner and is extremely simple to play, having only three controls: left, right and jump. Willy can climb stairs by walking into them (jumping through them to avoid them) and climb swinging ropes by pushing left or right depending on what direction the rope is swinging in. The play area itself consists of 60 flick-screen rooms (an impressively large number at the time of the game's release) containing patrolling monsters (everything from killer jellies to rolling giant eggs to enormous flies), various platforms and collectable objects. The collectable items glow to distinguish them from other items in the room.

John Elliott has done a black-and-white variant of Jet Set Willy called Mono (by tweaking the game-engine rather than converting the room-data). To make the items easier to spot, he has ... written patches called Wobble and Jiggle to make the items move right and back left by one pixel-column (Wobble), or up and back down by one pixel-row (Jiggle). You can find these three patches here, or download TAP files from the Files section of the Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy Yahoo! Group.

This Group is about the classic platform-games Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy. More specifically, it's about remakes of these games for computers other than the Sinclair ZX Spectrum for which they were originally written.

Keeping one jump ahead of the software market seems to come naturally to author of Jet Set Willy, Matthew Smith. Sue Denham checks out his follow-up to Manic Miner, where Miner Willy hits the big time.
