Born to the impoverished family of a Soho, London fruitseller, Jessie Matthews displayed an interest in dancing from a very early age, and by the time she was 12 was making a living entertaining in her neighborhood. She worked in the chorus line of various musicals, and got small parts in some early silent films.

The main plot line revolves around Michael Redgrave, unhappily engaged to a society lady, who falls for a lingerie model played by Jessie Matthews and her overbite. Much to-ing and fro-ing, playing of masquerades lead to the conclusion everyone expects, but the alarms and excursions are strange indeed.

As the older Jessie it is good to hear one of the most distinguished of British leading ladies, Anne Rogers, returning to the theatre. In the recording studio her voice may be a little more exposed than it was in the theatre, but she is thrilling when she gives a blazing reprise of 'Over my shoulder', and there is a touching defiance to her version of 'After all these years' (Jessie's song from the film of Tom Thumb, although Jessie didn't get to sing it herself on the soundtrack!).
