Simpson's religious upbringing shaped her early career, which began when she signed to a gospel label, recorded her first album, Jessica, and went out on the Christian youth-conference circuit. Then, when she was 17, Jessica went secular, signing to Columbia Records, which didn't object to her sexy girl-next-door image. She even became a more visible proponent of abstinence.
