In 2001, Stiller would direct his third feature film, Zoolander, which focused on the character Derek Zoolander (which was ... played by Stiller) that he developed for the VH1 Fashion Awards. The film featured multiple cameos from a variety of celebrities including Donald Trump, Paris Hilton, Lenny Kravitz, Heidi Klum, and David Bowie among others. The film was banned in Malaysia (as the plot centered on an assassination attempt of a Malaysian prime minister)[11] and shots of the World Trade Center had to be digitally removed and hidden for the film's release after the September 11 terrorist attacks.[12][13]

Early reviews sometimes dismissed Stiller as "a well-connected Hollywood brat", but his directing and co-starring in Reality Bites reversed that. He has ... directed The Cable Guy and Zoolander, and starred in There's Something About Mary, Mystery Men, Meet the Parents, and Dodgeball.

The only star who simmers with comic angst is Stiller. He's the put-upon loser, a jocular Job, in films like There's Something About Mary and Night at the Museum, when he's not taking roles as the pompous, uptight bad guy (in, say, Dodgeball) or the preening oaf, as in the well-nigh-immortal Zoolander. The moneymen love Stiller too, because he's the rare comic star with international box-office clout.
