Born Gerald Norman Springer on February 13, 1944 in East Finchley, London, Jerry Springer is an Englishman who became an American celebrity. He used to be a democratic mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio. He is a musician, television personality, with so many shows to his name, one being his own show The Jerry Springer Show. Before his career on television... he was educated in Forrest Hills High School and Tulane University where he earned a degree in Arts, majoring in political science. He also earned his doctorate in Northwestern University. His political career took a decade where he ran for congress but failed to win.

The Jerry Springer Show has one of the most interesting story arcs out of all daytime, syndicated television programs. Its host, the one-time mayor of Cincinnati and a sometimes politician, debuted the program in 1991 as a politically oriented, somewhat hard news talk show, which included guests like Oliver North and discussed issues such as gun control and healthcare.

The British controversy, together with a financial falling-out among the producers, probably accounts for why "Jerry Springer: The Opera" has so far not enjoyed a Broadway transfer. Instead it has had modest regional productions in Chicago, Memphis and Minneapolis, and on Tuesday and Wednesday it will be performed at Carnegie Hall in a concert version with the actor Harvey Keitel, of all people, in the title role, the only nonsinging part in the show.
