Garcia Plays Dylan presents 15 stellar examples of Dylan covers played by most of Garcia's important bands from 1973 to 1995. The 2-disc set includes all previously unreleased performances that took place in venues ranging from small clubs to a football stadium.

Garcia ... spent a lot of time in the recording studio helping out fellow musician friends in session work, often adding guitar, vocals, pedal steel, sometimes banjo and piano and even producing. He played on over 50 studio albums the styles of which were eclectic and varied, including bluegrass, rock, folk, blues, country, jazz, electronic music, gospel, funk, and reggae. Artists who sought Garcia's help included the likes of Jefferson Airplane (most notably Surrealistic Pillow), Tom Fogerty, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, David Bromberg, Robert Hunter, the late Paul Pena, Peter Rowan, Warren Zevon, Country Joe McDonald, Ken Nordine, Ornette Coleman, Bruce Hornsby, Bob Dylan and many more. He was also one of the first musicians to really cover in depth motown music in the early-1970s and probably the most prolific coverer of Bob Dylan songs.

Just after dawn on April 4, 1996 Garcia's ashes were sprinkled down the Ganges river 155 miles north of New Dehli by Deborah Koons Garcia and Bob Weir, the idea of which came to Weir in a dream. April 4 is known in India as Budh Purnima, Buddha's birthday and day of a full moon. It's ... the same day the Buddha reached nirvana, the escape from the endless cycle of reincarnation. Garcia's brief ceremony initiated after the total eclipse of the moon, which took place from about 4:30 to 6:00 am.

Garcia Plays Dylan doesn't have the completeness factor of this year's other marvelous Jerry Garcia estate releases--those are fuller documents and cross sections of Garcia's career, focusing on the magic of select nights or periods. But it adds another dimension and a different sort of thoroughness those releases can't, by nature, explore: the connection between two storied musicians as exemplified by one's tackling of the other's material in a variety of contexts.
