Jermaine Dupri is the son of a concert promoter and musical manager. Consequently, he was introduced to the music business at a very early age. Dupri performed as a dancer for top level r&b acts like Diana Ross and Cameo before producing his first record by the vocal trio Silk Tymes Leather. Jermaine Dupri was only 14.

Named the president of Virgin's urban division in early 2005, Jermaine Dupri -- formerly a VP at Arista -- has a lot of work cut out for himself. As of late, Virgin hasn't been known as the hottest spot for R&B and rap (or anything else, for that matter, apart from superstars like Lenny and Janet), but he has brought his So So Def roster with him and hopes to turn the situation around. Young, Fly & Flashy, titled just like a marketing campaign, is a way for him to show off his artists, whether they're developing (T. Waters, Young Capone, Dem Franchize Boyz), established (Bow Wow, Dupri himself), or past their peak of popularity (Da Brat, Daz Dillinger). These labelmates make a motley bunch, and this compilation is similarly scattered and uneven. Host Dupri makes a handful of contributions, including first single "Gotta Getcha," a rote club track co-written by Missy Elliott, but he leaves most of the room for his artists.

Jermaine Dupri has a point: any artist has to be able to chose how his/her work will be sold. But it stops here. The rest of the article is just moaning and whining.

Before his first multi-platinum success with Kriss Kross, Jermaine Dupri formed his own production company and record label, So So Def. Dupri's label has become one of the most successful in r&b and hip hop. The label was originally distributed through Sony Entertainment. When Jermaine Dupri was hired as President of Arista Black Music in 2003, So So Def went with him. A shift to Executive Vice President of Urban Music at Virgin in 2004 necessitated another move.

In 1998 Dupri debuted as a solo artist, releasing the rap album Jermaine Dupri Presents Life in 1472. In the same year he introduced the Atlanta-based male R&B quartet Jagged Edge, whose three albums for So So Def would each sell in excess of a million copies. The teen rapper Lil' Bow Wow debuted on the label in 2000.
