Jericho
built 257 days ago
Jericho was one of the first sites to be excavated in the Holy Land, second only to Jerusalem. The preliminary work was carried out in 1868 by Charles Warren, a British engineer. The first scientific excavations ... didn't come until 1907. Under two German archaeologists, Carl Watzinger and Ernest Sellin, a series of excavations were conducted from 1907-1909 and again in 1911. Hoping to validate the story of Jericho's destruction in the Old Testament, they collected a substantial amount of information that led them to believe the story of Joshua and the Israelites. Under closer examination of the data however , they concluded that Jericho had been unoccupied at the time the conquest would have occurred.

Jericho is believed to be one of, if not the oldest cities in the world. It was the first city captured by the Israelites after their 40 years of wandering in the desert after the exodus from Egypt. Ironically, Jericho (along with the Gaza Strip) was the first territory given to the Palestinians by Israel as part of their peace agreement in 1994. Today, the Palestinian Authority is developing the town in hopes of making it a major tourist attraction. It is ... where Yasir Arafat maintains a home.
The Save Jericho campaign will change the way Old Media interacts with the internet...CBS is being flooded with nuts. Not just fans, but actual peanuts. Nuts Online has a NUTS for Jericho promotion going. Fans can send any amount of money to contribute to a bulk purchase of nuts that will then be sent to CBS. The picture is of the first THOUSAND pounds going out. And there's another TON on the way.
A mushroom cloud looms on Jericho's horizon. The first installment of Beyond Jericho began with an unknown man calling someone on a cell phone, requesting a ransom of $1.2 million for a woman he kidnapped. He then disappears underground through a metal trap door. While climbing down, he hears and feels a bang, but thinks nothing of it. After conversing with an associate about their next plans, he picks the woman up and climbs back up to the roof. When he opens the door, it's surrounded by rubble. The entire city around them has been destroyed. Shortly after, rubble falls through the trap door.
jericho A last addition to the seemingly endless treasures of Jericho is located in its vicinity: Nabi Musa, a little west on the main road leading back to Jerusalem. The building itself is from the Middle Ages. Among Muslims it is famous as a place of pilgrimage: it was originally built as a shrine from which one could see the grave of Moses on Mount Nebo (in Jordan). Moses, as everyone knows, did not enter the Promised Land, but died just before he and the twelve tribes were ready to enter it. At some point the story must have changed, and people came to believe that Nabi Musa was really the place of Moses' grave. In Ottoman times (19th Century) it got so far that the Turkish rulers actively promoted a yearly pilgrimage there for Moslem worshippers. The pilgrimage was organised on the Christian holiday of Easter (the Moslems do not have Easter nor Pesach holiday).

Jericho is somewhat difficult to reach. There are no direct connections between Jericho and Jerusalem. When you want to get there, use the Arabic word "Al-Quds" rather than the Hebrew "Jerusalem" to speak to the drivers. From Jerusalem there is at least one easy option by service (pronounced serveese). From just outside the Damascus Gate, take the Palestinian Service to Ramallah, line 18, which costs 5.20 NIS. This will take you to a small bus station in Ramallah.
