Jeremy Mayfield: Seasons
built 608 days ago
More news on Mayfield: It has been reported that Jeremy Mayfield (released by Ray Evernham Friday) might be in the #38 Robert Yates Racing Ford beginning this week at Michigan. Mayfield certainly seems to be available. However, it appears David Gilliland, who has been working his way through the junior NASCAR ranks, is going to be the choice come next season for Yates and it has ... been reported he could step into the car immediately with Elliott Sadler, already reportedly hired by Evernham for the #19 car next season, starting his new job next week [at MIS]. Some have said that Gilliland, who has not been approved for superspeedways including Talladega coming Oct. 8 during The Chase, might want to protect his rookie status for next year. Some in the know have said it’s not his decision but it’s up to Yates as to whether he wants the new kid to run for rookie honors in 2007. Meanwhile, there’s also was the suit filed by Mayfield to try to keep his ride with Evernham.

In 1994, Mayfield declared for NASCAR Winston Cup Series Rookie of the Year, and signed to drive the Sadler Bros.' 95 Shoney's Ford. Unfortunately, he struggled heavily in the 95, and was released. He signed to drive the #02 for T.W. Taylor sponsored by Children's Miracle Network for four races, before completing the year in the #98 Fingerhut car for Cale Yarborough. He ran twenty starts in his inaugural season, his best finish a 19th at Rockingham. In 1995, he stayed with Yarborough full-time with new sponsorship from RCA, and had an eighth place run at the Miller Genuine Draft 500, and had a 31st place finish in the points standings after qualifying for 27 out of 31 races.
In 2002, Mayfield hoped to bounce back in the No. 19 Dodge of Evernham Motorsports. He had a second-place finish at Las Vegas earlier in the year, but struggled to a 26th-place finish in the standings. He garnered four top-10 finishes in 36 starts and was out of the top 20 in all of the last six races of the season.

In 2002, Ray Evernham signed Mayfield to pilot his No. 19 Dodge Dealers Dodge. In his first year under the Evernham Dodge banner, Mayfield notched four top ten finishes and two top fives, nearly pulling off the victory in Las Vegas in just his third start. Mayfield won the pole for The Winston Open, a non-points special event, and went on to win the race in dominating fashion. He became only the third driver to win multiple Winston Opens, both victories coming from the pole position. The victory placed him in the all star event, The Winston, for the fifth consecutive year. In 2003, Mayfield began the season with a strong eighth place finish in the season opening Daytona 500.
