Dahmer continued being a loner during his years at Revere High School. He had average grades, worked on the school newspaper and developed a bad drinking problem. His parents, possibly distracted from their own struggles, divorced when Jeff was almost 18. He remained living with his father who traveled a lot and was busy nurturing a relationship with his new wife.

[W]hat would the APA say if a link appeared to exist between homosexuality and cannibalism, as it did in the case of Jeffrey Dahmer? Would they then declare that men having sex with men and then killing them and eating their flesh are not really homosexuals but exclusively cannibals? (The possibility of such a link may seem far-fetched, but there was a copy-cat case in Germany a few years after Dahmer's conviction. And let's not forget the father of modern gay cannibalism, Tobias Schneebaum).

After ten months, the judge granted him early release despite a letter from Dahmer's father urging him not to release him until he received treatment. He went to stay with his grandmother in early March of 1990, but his stay there was conditional upon him finding his own place to live.
