In November 1965 Jefferson Airplane signed a recording contract with RCA Victor, which included an unheard-of advance of $25,000. On December 10, 1965 the group played at the first Bill Graham show at the Fillmore ballroom, supported by The Great Society and others. The Airplane ... appeared at Family Dog shows promoted by Chet Helms.
Jefferson Airplane takes Off was released in September 1966. Folk music very much influenced the album, which included such staples as John D. Loudermilk's "Tobacco Road" and Dino Valente's "Let's Get Together", as well as original ballads "It's No Secret" and "Come Up the Years." The LP garnered considerable attention in the USA and eventually became a gold album.
After casting about for a long time for a name for themselves, they came up with "Jefferson Airplane," which meant absolutely nothing. They worried that around for awhile, finally accepted it, and opened under its unlikely wings at the Matrix, a club on Fillmore Street, on Aug. 13, 1965, producing music that sounded like nothing anyone had ever heard before, a weird mating of folk song, blues, rock n' roll, Edgard Varese, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Ethel Smith on the electric organ. — Calvin Kentfield
With the formal departure of Covington and addition of Kantner's old friend David Freiberg on vocals, Jefferson Airplane began a tour to promote the Long John Silver LP in the summer of 1972, their first concerts in over a year. This tour included a major free concert in Central Park that drew more than 50,000 people.
