Jefferson Airplane formed in San Francisco during the summer of 1965, emerging from the San Francisco Bay folk music boom (see American folk music revival). Although the Airplane was considered the pre-eminent San Francisco group of the period, Paul Kantner was the only native San Franciscan in the band.

In November 1965, Jefferson Airplane received a $20,000 advance from RCA Records - the largest advance ever paid to any rock band at that time. Their career went on to document the 60s adventure from naive optimism through excited experiment to messianic self-indulgence.

The group continued to make records in the early 1970’s but eventually Jefferson Airplane became Jefferson Starship. Despite the fact that the band was a complete 1960’s band that embodied the spirit of the late 1960’s, they did have some success in the 1970’s and beyond.

Released two years after their remarkable 1969 album Volunteers, this record marked a steady downturn for Jefferson Airplane. With most of the original members were gone, the band lost their focus. It shows in eleven songs that are little more than standard arena rock fare. The standout track "Pretty As You Feel" saves the album.
