built 649 days ago
Under NASCAR's former points system, which was shelved when the Chase for the Nextel Cup began in 2004, Gordon already would have clinched his fifth title. Instead, his commanding lead was wiped out when the Chase began, and he trails Johnson by 86 points with only 400 miles left to catch up.

ESPN.com is reporting Rick Hendrick would like to sign Johnson to a lifetime contract - similar to what the owner did with Jeff Gordon. "My goal with him is real simple - to keep him with me for as long as he races," Hendrick said. "It's a flattering comment, and I think I kind of knew that," Johnson said. "But it's something we've never talked about or put on the table."
