Jeff Gordon: Jimmie Johnson

San Diego Union-Tribune - Hendrick Motorsports (Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Casey Mears drivers): Already the most dominant team in the sport, Hendrick became a superpower with the addition of fan favorite Earnhardt. But outside the restrictor-plate
Gordon hits 300...top-10's: #24-Jeff Gordon scored the 300th [and 301 at Sonoma) top-10 finish of his Nextel Cup career in Michigan on June 17, 2007. With 489 starts in the Cup series, the finish puts him in line with other legends of the sport in collecting 300 top-10's in fewer than 500 starts. Richard Petty accomplished the task in 1969 in his 439th career start; David Pearson picked up his 300th top-10 in 1976 in his 449th start; Dale Earnhardt's 300th came in 1994 in his 463rd start; Darrell Waltrip scored #300 in 1989 in his 470th start, while Bobby Allison accomplished the feat in 1980 in his 475th start. With competition as close as it is today, it remains to be seen whether another driver can get to 300 top-10's in fewer than 500 career starts. The most likely candidates would be Tony Stewart who has 179 top-10's in 300 races, and Jimmie Johnson who has accumulated 120 top-10 finishes in 199 races.(Gordonline.com)(6-26-2007)

Gordon won the Brickyard 400 in August of 2004, obtaining his 4th Indy win. He has claimed wins at the famed raceway in 1994, 1998, and 2001. He is the only NASCAR driver with four Brickyard 400 victories at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and one of only five drivers to have four victories at the historic track. He finished 3rd in the 2004 NEXTEL Cup points standing behind Kurt Busch and teammate Jimmie Johnson even though he scored the most total points throughout the whole season, a consequence of the new Chase system implemented in 2004.
Jeffery Michael Gordon was born August 4, 1971 in Vallejo, California. Raised in Pittsboro, Indiana, Gordon now has homes in Charlotte, North Carolina and New York City. He is a four-time NASCAR points champion, with DuPont as his primary sponsor. His other sponsors include Pepsi, Nicorette, Quaker State, Haas, GMAC, Georgia-Pacific and Sparkle. Gordon, along with Rick Hendrick, are co-owners of the 2006 Nextel Cup Series Champion car sponsored by Lowe’s and driven by Jimmie Johnson.

Following Daytona, Gordon took the pole for the Auto Club 500 at the California Speedway and finished second. Despite a sub par 36th qualifying effort for the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Gordon led the most laps (111) and took home a 2nd place result behind teammate Jimmie Johnson. It was the first time Gordon started a season with three straight top ten finishes since the 1997 season.
