Clint Bowyer and Regan Smith scrubbed the wall, Denny Hamlin gave teammate Tony Stewart a little nudge and Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon practiced their drafting dance. It's just another practice at Daytona International Speedway.
Gordon began 2002 with a special paint scheme in recognition of DuPont's 200th Anniversary. He won the 125-mile Qualifying race at Daytona but an ill-advised block on Sterling Marlin late in the Daytona 500 sent him spinning through the grass. He started the season rather sluggish as he failed to post a top-five finish through the first six races. After an uncharacteristic spin at Bristol, he bounced back the following week with a second-place finish at Texas. Five straight top-tens from mid-May thru mid-June got him back into title contention. However, a broken gear at Sonoma and a flat tire at Daytona in July put him behind once again.

Before his successes, Gordon logged more than 600 victories in 15 years of driving in open-wheeled competition. During the 1970s and early 1980s, he won three national Quarter-Midget championships and four national karting championships. He became USAC's youngest driver when he was granted his race driver's license for that circuit on his 16th birthday. In four different USAC divisions in more than four years, he recorded 22 victories, 21 fast times, 55 top-5s and 66 top-10s in just 93 starts.

In 2005, Gordon captured his third Daytona 500, but suffered a disappointing season, failing to make the Chase for the Championship and finishing the season in 11th place. With 10 races to go, Gordon’s longtime crew chief, Robbie Loomis, departed from the pit box and was replaced by Steve Letarte, who continued on as Gordon’s crew chief for the 2006 season.
